The Community Orchard

A restored corner of East Yorkshire countryside - open to all, tended by volunteers, planted with heritage varieties and hope for generations to come.

The Revival

From neglect to community treasure

In 2023, the Everthorpe Forum approached East Riding of Yorkshire Council about leasing the orchard. With the support of North Cave Council, the lease was signed in October 2024. On a beautiful spring afternoon - 27th April 2025, the trees in full blossom - Councillor Victoria Aitken cut the ribbon to mark the official opening. The plan is to restore an ancient orchard and provide access to the fruit to everyone in Everthorpe and the surrounding area.

01

Clearing the Overgrowth

The first step was the hardest. Volunteers spent months clearing brambles, removing fallen trees, and hauling away years of accumulated debris.

Every weekend, the community came together with tools and determination, slowly revealing the potential beneath the overgrowth.

Planting New Trees

With the land cleared, we planted over 240 hedgerow trees donated by the Woodland Trust, and 6 heritage fruit trees bought by local residents.

A living willow structure was planted in the shape of an 'e' — a living legacy for generations to come.

Building the New Wall

A successful National Lottery Community Fund application allowed us to reinstate the roadside drystone wall, built using traditional techniques by a local craftsperson.

A wall built to last hundreds of years.

Dens & Dead Hedges

After cutting the hedge we used thicker branches to build a children's play den, and brush to make a dead hedge — helping to keep the orchard stock-proof against the local roaming deer.
